Frequently Asked Questions

Thank you for visiting our website. Below is a guideline/outline of answers to many of your questions. Please locate your question and click on the question for your answer.

1. What do I do if I have an animal I need to surrender?

If you have a dog or cat that you need to surrender, please understand that we are at capacity almost always at the shelter; HOWEVER, we do make exceptions in certain situations if space is available.

Email petsavers@petsaversshreveport.org with a picture of your pet, along with a brief biography (including whether or not the animal is spayed/neutered, UTD on shots, heartworm preventive, etc.) and why you need to surrender the pet. Please be advised that it may take up to 24 hours for us to respond.

If we can't take a pet: While we would like to take every pet that comes to our door, we simply cannot. Our space is limited and we try very hard to take in animals that we know we can find good homes for quickly in order to fill that empty space with another animal. We do; however, offer many other alternatives to coming to the shelter.

You can also place your pet in The Shreveport Times for free if the animal is a "free to good home" animal, by calling 318-459-3333. PLEASE BE CAREFUL, though, bad people look for free pets!! We advise you to screen any potential adopter thoroughly by contacting their vet and conducting a home visit.

Another avenue to get your pet noticed is to place him/her on Facebook! Share his/her picture with your friends and ask them to share with their friends! You can reach 1000's of people with this approach.

2. What do I do if I've lost or found an animal?

If you've lost or found an animal, please do the following:

The Shreveport Times: Lost and Found pet ads can be placed for FREE in the "Stroller" section of The Shreveport Times by calling 318-459-3233 between 9am and 2:30pm, weekdays, and 2-5pm, weekends. You can also place a PAID ad in the Classifieds section under "Lost and Found."

Animal Control: Contact Shreveport Animal Control at 318-226-6624 and press "3" for the kennel, or better yet, visit them at 1500 Monty Street, Shreveport, with a picture of the animal and your contact information. Also call Bossier Animal Control at 318-741-8499 or visit them at 3217 Old Shed Road, Bossier City, LA.

Other websites to post a lost or found pet ad: www.fidofinder.com, www.petfinder.com (classifieds section), www.shrevepets.com, and www.craigslist.com, or post them on your Facebook page and ask others to share the information. You can also post them on Pet Savers' Facebook page.

Microchip: If you've found a dog, please have a vet scan for a chip.

Flyers: Post flyers in the vicinity where the dog was lost or found.

3. How do I donate money or material items?

We always need money! Our operating expenses are roughly $10,000 a month, with the vast majority of these costs being vet bills. Any financial donation is appreciated and of course, tax deductable!

Via the "Donate Now" button at the top of our website (please be advised that a percentage of your donation is deducted for this service)...

  3. Dish soap
  4. Dog treats

Items we don't need right now:

  1. Blankets

4. I've misplaced the vet records of the animal I adopted from Pet Savers. How do I get another copy?

If you misplaced the vet records of the pet you adopted from Pet Savers or you never received the email with the vet records, please email petsavers@petsaversshreveport.org with the name of the pet (while it was at the shelter), along with your name, phone number, and the date of adoption.

5. How do I return an animal I adopted from Pet Savers?

We, at Pet Savers, want every adoption to be a success. Our goal is to rehome dogs/cats into their forever homes. The decision to adopt should be taken seriously, along with the 10-15 year (in most cases) financial and emotional commitment. More often than not, when an animal is returned we find it is an owner issue and not a pet issue. Please seriously consider the commitment you made to your pet at the time of adoption before making the decision to return your pet.

However, if you decide you do need to return the pet, please adhere to the following:

  1. Email petsavers@petsaversshreveport.org with your name, the name of the pet (while at Pet Savers), when adopted, and the reason for return.
  2. Because we are ALWAYS full, it may take up to 7 days to accept the animal back at the shelter. (Emergency situations will be considered.)
  3. You MUST bring vet records when you return the animal!

You will receive a return email within 48 hours of your email with a date you can return the animal. We appreciate your understanding.

6. How do I find out more information about a pet at your shelter or find out if the animal is still available?

Typically, the information listed in an animal's profile is all we know. Our website is updated every 2-3 days. It's likely the pet you're interested in is at the shelter, but sometimes (if it's a highly adoptable pet), the animal may have been adopted. If you want to be sure, email petsavers@petsaversshreveport.org before coming out.

Our hours of operation and directions to our shelter are listed on our home page.

Driving in from a long distance or live out of state?

We do make adoptions to areas outside of Shreveport/Bossier and out-of-state; however, we do not ship or transport at this time. If you are driving from a long distance and wish to apply to adopt one of our animals, please email petsavers@petsaversshreveport.org for an adoption application. Please indicate which animal or animals you are interested in. Please be advised that the pet you are interested in may or may not be available at the time you make application. Applications are subject to approval and veterinary references will be checked.

7. I'd like to volunteer. How can I help?

If you'd like to volunteer, please email petsavers@petsaversshreveport.org with what you wish to do, and your availability. If you can't volunteer on a "regular" basis, we will add you to our email group for "project" volunteer opportunities. Volunteers need to be at least 18 years or older to volunteer at the shelter.

8. How do I apply to foster a pet?

Fostering a pet requires a special type of person. We look for foster homes where there is someone usually always home and a person who has the time, patience, and experience to foster. If you feel you have what it takes, please email petsavers@petsaversshreveport.org for a foster application. Please keep in mind the foster homes we typically look for our homes that can foster cats/kittens, larger dogs, or sick/injured animals. Healthy and easy-to-place animals typically don't go into foster, unless we're having space issues.

9. I need help with vet care or feeding my pet. Can Pet Savers help?

Pet Savers never wants an animal to go hungry or without vet care if it's injured or sick because an owner has fallen on hard times. While we can't help in every case, we do take all situations into consideration and help when and where we can. If you legitimately need help, please email linda@petsaversshreveport.org.

10. Other information:

If you have an emergency situation, please call one of the numbers listed below and only between the hours 9am-6pm. Please ONLY call these numbers in an emergency situation! These people are volunteers! Even if your situation is an emergency, Pet Savers may not be able to help, but may be able to guide you in the right direction.
