Pet Savers

Welcome to Pet Savers, Inc. in Shreveport, Louisiana. We are a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to rescue, protect, and place abandoned or unwanted pets and provide funds for neutering, spaying, and other veterinary care.

We provide a safe, no-kill alternative to Animal Control. Our space is limited, however, and if pets are not being adopted fast enough we won't have room to take on more.

Help the Pets!!

We are in immediate need of the following Volunteer positions!

I am only one, but still I am one.
I cannot do everything, but still I can do something;
and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.
~ Edmund Everett Hale

PHONE VOLUNTEER: What's more rewarding than helping people help their pets? Volunteer to help answer phone calls and feel good about helping to solve problems and find solutions. Find reward in educating people about Pet Savers' programs and services. You are able to work from home.

GREETERS: Greet and assist potential adopters in pet selection, explain adoption policies, answer questions, remove pets from kennels/runs and allow potential adopters to interact with animal. Also, assist with general Administrative duties. Ideal time commitment = at least one day per week from 12:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. but you will certainly be considered even if you can commit fewer days/week. Saturday is our busiest day and we are closed Monday and Tuesday.

SHELTER ASSISTANT Clean cat rooms and dog and puppy runs. Give food and water to animals. Help exercise the dogs and cats, praise them with treats and attention. This is a critical Volunteer position that helps give our pets a safe and pleasant place to live.

CAT ROOM SHELTER ASSISTANTS are needed, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Sunday from 9:30 a.m. 11:30 a.m.

Please contact Jennifer Smith (318) 272-1649 or email jennifer@petsaversshreveport.org.

RH's Just 4 Dogs Program

RH's Just 4 Dog's Class 1 has Graduated!

Together, the Rutherford House for Boys, Pet Savers, and Oak Grove Training Center have instituted a dog program with the boys at Rutherford House.

The overall goal of this program is to instill confidence and socialization in both the boys and the dogs. We firmly believe that with the boys working the dogs it will give them a sense of purpose they would need to become better men, family members, and members of society. For the dogs it means...well, just the same!

Petey, Delila, Daisy, Caesar, Fritz and Sheba have completed the 4 week program with their handlers and passed the obedience test. This includes: heeling, sitting, downs, and the ability to approach a stranger and another dog. Each dog and their handler have earned a RH's Canine Completion Certificate (based on the AKC's Canine Good Citizen test).

These young men have given a gift to the dogs of Pet Savers, now the dogs are ready to pay it forward, by giving the gift of companionship to you.

Here is more information about RH Just 4 Dogs Program

NEW SHELTER HOURS

Effective March 26, 2012, we will be open Wednesday to Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. We will be closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Holiday hours may vary.

Thank you for stopping in and choosing to adopt!

"Sanctuary Dog" Special...many dogs $50

Have you ever thought about the downside of a NO-KILL shelter? You wouldn't think there would be one, but here it is...We always have about 30 dogs that have been with us for at least 4 years. Some of them will never get homes. They are happy and (mostly) healthy and loved by the staff and volunteers. But think about what that means...they are taking up kennels that could be turned over and many more dogs rescued if they were only more "adoptable." Every few months, one of our "sanctuary dogs" does get adopted, but we wish more of them would get good homes. They are now older, usually bigger, but could be wonderful companions for someone.
When I started Pet Savers, I took every dog that came across my path, including Mabel as a little puppy, with her 8 black brothers and sisters. Mabel is the only one left after 6 years, but she has some costly skin issues. The other alternative is euthanization, but we're not ready for that at Pet Savers.
Until June 30, our older dogs will have $50 adoption fees, BUT the requirements for adoption will be the same as always and you will need to apply for them. (You can generally tell which ones are our long-termers by how far back they are on the web site.) And just so you know, there is a 2-week trial period with a money-back guarantee. Of course, they can be returned to us any time if they don't work out, but we hope that doesn't happen after 2 weeks.

Surrendering Your Pet

Pet Savers wants to save as many animals as possible. We are a limited intake shelter, so due to space limitations we are unable to accept every animal. We are most often at capacity.

Please visit the ASPCA's webpage for information about Re-Homing Your Dog which can also serve as a guide to Re-Homing Your Cat.

A few other options include the following:

  • Reach out to friends, family members, co-workers and neighbors to see if anyone might be interested in your pet. Email everyone you know and ask them to pass on the email to others. This may not be easy to let others know that you need to re-home your pet but a shelter is not the best place for you pet, the best thing for your animal is going from your home to another.

  • Post a picture with a description of your pet on Craigslist, local bulletin boards at pet stores or vet offices. Please use extreme discretion as there may be people who do not have your pets best interest at heart.

  • If you have a specific breed of pet do a Google search for your breeds rescue e.g. Golden Retriever Rescue.

Surrendering Cats and Kittens

Because we have had a terrible deadly virus pass through our shelter we must adhere to these guidelines to ensure the health of our cat population.

CATS must have had 2 vaccinations within the past year for viruses that include CALICI. They must have been given at least 2 weeks apart and 2 weeks must have passed since the last one. We can give the vaccinations but you will be required to hold your cat until the vaccinations are effective which would mean a total of 4 weeks.

KITTENS must be 7 weeks or older to get the first vaccination. They must have one more at 9 weeks. In other words, pending we have the space available, we could not take your kitten until it is 11 weeks old.

CATS & KITTENS All cats and kittens should be tested to FeLV and FIV prior to admission. We require records of vaccinations and tests from your veterinarian.

We are not able to handle FERAL cats or kittens. Please call Robinson's Rescue Spay/Neuter Clinic for information about their feral program: (318) 221-0017.

CALLING PET SAVERS
Because of our huge call volume, we are not able to take calls or messages on our Pet Savers phone (318) 636-0400. We ask you to try using our website instead. But, if you are desperate to talk with someone, you can contact MaKayla (603) 630-4946, Dorothy (318) 773-9641, or Catherine (318) 741-9110. We are not equipped to respond to emergencies, however. Our staff and volunteers are limited as we are a small non-profit organization funded by your donations.

ADOPTION PROCESS:
We welcome your visit to the shelter and we are now adopting by application, which you can download from this site. Our pets are precious to us and we have big financial and emotional investments in them. We simply try to make the best match for both the person and the animal. Our adoption fees are now $50 to $80 for dogs, and $60 for cats.

PET SAVERS is always a work in progress and we keep learning every day how to best carry out our mission. Thank you for caring enough to visit our website!

Our standard adoption fees range from $80-$150 for dogs and $60 for cats.

Because many of the pets we save are strays, we cannot guarantee that they are house-trained, good with children, good with other pets, friendly or unfriendly. We simply don't know their history unless the owners gave them up for adoption. But we feel all animals are deserving of a home and safe place to live, regardless of how large or small, cute or homely, perfect or disabled.

We rely on donations to keep up our work. If you can help us with donations or by volunteering, we welcome you. If not, we hope you will tell others about us. And thanks for visiting our web site!

Note: Please do NOT bring pets to the shelter without prior permission.
