Donate a Kuranda Pet Bed

We would like a warm bed to share while we wait for our forever home. The floor here at the shelter is cold and a bed would give us a warm, place to lie on during cold nights. Please click the button below to order a bed for us.

Pet Savers

Welcome to Pet Savers, Inc. in Shreveport, Louisiana. We are a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to rescue, protect, and place abandoned or unwanted pets and provide funds for neutering, spaying, and other veterinary care.

We provide a safe, no-kill alternative to Animal Control. Our space is limited, however, and if pets are not being adopted fast enough we won't have room to take on more.

Pet Savers needs help with my surgery… can you help?

Pet Savers needs help with my surgery… can you help?

Hi, ya'll. My name is Trace. I was found limping off of Sligo Road in Bossier City by a really nice lady who picked me up. She took me to her vet and he determined that my right front leg is fused the way you see it. I'm not sure what happened, but maybe I got too close to a car of something. My injury is old, though, so I've lived this way for a while now. Several people suggested that she take me to the pound. When she called the pound, she was told I would be euthanized. She's been trying to find me a new home and someone who had the money to take care of my injury, but she's not been able to. She brought me to Pet Savers to see if they could help. She left me in the car and went to talk to the lady inside. The lady said they simply cannot help out every case, but that they would take a look at me and make a determination after they met me. Hardy har! That was all it took... and you know what?... Pet Savers said "YES"! You know why?... well... it's 'cause I have the best personality! I met Little Momma... and Oreo... and half the dogs in Area 1. Even with some of their vicious barks... I didn't care. I walked around with my tail wagging and said "whatever dudes"... bark all you want! I'm a lover, not a fighter! I'm scheduled to go to Pet Savers' vet on Monday, August 8, 2010, to be assessed as to how what they plan to do about my leg. I may have to have an amputation (whatever that means)... or they may end up re-breaking my leg and putting a pin in it. Whatever they will do, I know I'll be in good hands!

There's only one problem. Pet Savers needs help to pay for my surgery. They agreed to help me and will make it work somehow, but if others were to help out, it wouldn't put such a burden on the Pet Savers' account. Whatever you can spare... $10... $20... the amount doesn't matter. If you can help, you can donate in several ways: You can donate directly to Pet Savers' vet at Southern Hills Animal Hospital, 641 Bert Kouns, Shreveport, LA 71118, OR at the shelter any day of the week, including weekends 12-4:30pm at 4380 Noyes Drive, Shreveport, La., OR mail it to: Pet Savers, 632 Dudley Drive, Shreveport, LA 71104, or you can donate on-line (but keep in mind a percentage is taken off the top if you make your donation online).

Now, a little bit about me! I'm about 3 years old. I'm a Golden Retriever mix with a heart of gold and a temperament to match. I get along great with people of all ages, other dogs, and cats. My rescuer says I travel great in a car, but need training on a leash. She says I haven't been destructive at her house and I haven't tried to dig. I'm heartworm negative, UTD on shots, and scheduled to be neutered at the same time they work on my leg. Once that's all done, I'll be ready for adoption. You can check on my status by emailing petsavers@bellsouth.net.

Love and kisses... Trace

CATS and KITTENS

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

Because we have had a terrible virus at our shelter that swept through two different times and killed too many cats, we are not able to just take in your cat or kittens.

CATS must have had 2 vaccinations within the past year for viruses that include CALICI. They must have been given at least 2 weeks apart and 2 weeks must have passed since the last one. We can give the vaccinations.

KITTENS must be 7 weeks or older to get the first vaccination. They must have one more at 9 weeks. In other words, we could not take the kitten (IF we have room!) until it is 11 weeks old.

We are not able to handle FERAL CATS or kittens. Please call Robinson's Rescue Spay/ Neuter Clinic about a feral program: 861-0101.

We can place your pets on our web site and now offer special pricing from Robinson's Rescue Spay/ Neuter Clinic for you or for the adopter. No more "Ooops...the cat got pregnant before we realized it."

Please don't be mad at Pet Savers...we do what we can and want to help, but we did not create the overpopulation problem.

Some important things to know before you contact us...

CALLING PET SAVERS
We have volunteers who return your calls from their homes. They are not AT the shelter. (We rarely answer the phone because of the huge number of calls.) Sometimes they can't understand your phone # or sometimes you leave a number with no voice mail set up. We are not able to respond to emergency situations, so give us a little time to get back to you. Call again if you don't hear from us.

TAKING IN PETS:
We wish we could take them all, but we have City and Parish limits: 75 dogs and 35 cats.
WE CAN HELP YOU find a home for your pet... if you have a little time and patience... by placing your animal on our web site if we cannot take it. We have become part sanctuary because of some not-so-adoptable dogs. Many more can be rescued if we take in adoptable dogs that turn over quickly. Some have now been with Pet Savers for 4 years. That was not our intent. However, the dogs are happy and healthy and we are not willing to let them go to just any home.

ADOPTION PROCESS:
For various reasons, we adopt to only 60-70% of people who come out to the shelter. Our screening process allows us to know within minutes whether you meet our adoption requirements. Our pets are precious to us and we have big financial and emotional investments in them. We simply try to select the best homes and adopters possible.

VOLUNTEERING:
We love volunteers, but our volunteer opportunities are rarely what you picture, and our part-time employees do most of the hard work. Our dogs are all sweet and lovable alone or with their kennel-mates, but some like to fight each other, given the opportunity. Those opportunities are too often provided by well-meaning volunteers who leave a gate unlocked or let the wrong dog out to play with another dog. We no longer allow children under 18 to volunteer with the dogs due to safety issues, but we can provide ideas for helping in other ways.

We always need phone volunteers to return calls (half a day a week from your home phone) and Cat Room/Office cleaning volunteers.

PET SAVERS is still a work in progress and we keep learning every day how to best carry out our mission. Thank you for caring enough to visit our web site!

Directions: From I-20 heading west. Take Pines Rd. exit (exit 10) and turn right (north). Take the first right (Greenwood Rd. - Rt. 80) and go about 1/2 mile to just beyond Shouse Collision Repair. Turn left on Noyes Rd. and go to the end.

Our standard adoption fees are $80 for dogs and $60 for cats.

Most cats and kittens are boarded at the Pet Savers Shelter. Some are declawed.

Because many of the pets we save are strays, we cannot guarantee that they are house-trained, good with children, good with other pets, friendly or unfriendly. We simply don't know their history unless the owners gave them up for adoption. But we feel all animals are deserving of a home and safe place to live, regardless of how large or small, cute or homely, perfect or disabled.

We rely on donations to keep up our work. If you can help us with donations or by volunteering, we welcome you. If not, we hope you will tell others about us. And thanks for visiting our web site!

Note: Please do NOT bring pets to the shelter without prior permission.
