OUR MISSION

Welcome to Pet Savers, Inc. in Shreveport, Louisiana. We are a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to rescue, protect, and place abandoned or unwanted pets and provide funds for neutering, spaying, and other veterinary care.

We have provided a safe, no-kill alternative to animal control for almost two decades. Our space is limited, however, and if pets are not being adopted quickly enough, we will not have room to take in more.

By adopting a pet, you will be changing the life of a homeless animal. You will not only save the life of the pet you adopt, but you will create space for another life to be saved.

CONTACT US

calling pet savers

Because of our huge call volume, we are not able to take calls or messages on our Pet Savers phone (318) 636-0400. We ask for communication via our website instead.

If you are desperate to talk with someone, please contact one of our phone volunteers between 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

  • Cathy (318) 469-3735
  • Kim (318) 754-6106
  • Cindy (318) 294-2721
  • Karen (318) 347-6959

Speak SLOWLY and CLEARLY when leaving them a message, and be sure your voicemail is set up and not full. TEXTING is easier for them.

All the ladies listed above are all volunteers with careers or busy lives and are not AT the shelter. We are not equipped to respond to emergencies. Our staff and volunteers are limited as we are a small non-profit organization funded by your donations. Up to 65 dogs, and 15 cats! We are governed by city zoning and licensed by Caddo Parish Animal Services.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Adoption Process

Casual visits to the shelter are no longer feasible. We are able to adopt by application through our online Adoption Application. Our pets are precious to us, and we have big financial and emotional investments in them. We simply try to make the best match for both the person and the animal. Our current adoption fees are $90-$200 for dogs, and $65-$100 for MOST cats.

Surrendering Your Pet

Note: Please do NOT bring pets to the shelter without prior permission.

Pet Savers wants to save as many animals as possible. We are a limited intake shelter, so due to space and City zoning we are unable to accept every animal. We are almost always at capacity. 65 DOGS…15 CATS…that’s IT!

SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT CATS
We DO have cats to adopt, but we are limited on intakes.
There are now TWO “Cat Only” rescues to contact in Shreveport. (Please see their Facebook pages).

  • Shreveport Bossier Animal Rescue
  • Port City Cat Rescue

Reach out to others to let them know you need to re-home your pet… a shelter is not usually the best place for it. The best thing for your animal is going from your home to another GOOD home.

We can give you ideas about screening applicants.

If you have a specific breed of pet, do a Google search for your breed’s rescue, e.g. Golden Retriever Rescue. Do not worry about how far away it is. Oftentimes, transport assistance could be available.

We are not the only rescue in the area…just the largest…but we are still limited. For a complete list of local rescue organizations, call one of our Phone Volunteers and leave a message.

If you do want to bring us your pet for possible intake, you must call to see if you can make an appointment. We need as much pertinent information as possible and a texted photo. Weight, sex, spayed/neutered, house-trained, up to date on shots, heartworm preventive, good with dogs, kids, etc.

Volunteering

Love animals? Your generous donation of time makes a real difference in the lives of both our animals and our human team.

We can ALWAYS use volunteers in many different capacities, both hands on and hands off.

Fencing, general maintenance, socializing animals, assisting with feeding, bathing, cleaning, transport, data entry, and much, much more.

Download and fill out our Volunteer Application and Volunteer Contract. Please bring your Volunteer Contract with you on the day your service begins with Pet Savers.

Fostering an Animal

Fostering a pet requires a special type of person. We look for foster homes where there is someone usually always home and a person who has the time, patience, and experience to foster.

Please keep in mind the foster homes we typically look for our homes that can foster cats/kittens, larger dogs, or sick/injured animals. Healthy and easy-to-place animals typically don’t go into foster, unless we’re having space issues.

What kind of animals need foster care?
• Puppies and kittens under two months old
• Mothers with nursing litters
• Dogs and cats with medical conditions or injuries
• Special needs fosters

Can I become a foster volunteer if I have pets of my own?
Yes, we welcome pet owners as foster volunteers. Please keep in mind that there is always a health risk when exposing your pets to other animals, in any setting. However, the risk is minimal if your pets are vaccinated and in good health.

How long do animals need to stay in foster care?
The typical foster stay is two weeks to two months, depending on the needs of the individual animal(s) in your care. The timeframe of each foster situation will be discussed with you ahead of time.

If you feel you have what it takes, fill out a Foster Application today.

About Us

Because many of the pets we save are strays, we cannot guarantee that they are house-trained, good with children, good with other pets, friendly or unfriendly. We simply don’t know their history unless the owners gave them up for adoption. But we feel all animals are deserving of a home and safe place to live, regardless of how large or small, cute or homely, perfect or disabled.

We rely on donations to keep up our work. If you can help us with donations or by volunteering, we welcome you. If not, we hope you will tell others about us. And thanks for visiting our website!

Note: Please do NOT bring pets to the shelter without prior permission.
